Arjan Elenbaas
My name is Arjan Elenbaas.
I am a draftsman specialized in making screen prints.
Method
I create a sketch based on a photo. I use that sketch as the basis for drawing all the color layers. I create one drawing for each color layer.
Using an exposure process, I place these layers of color as stencils on a fine-mesh screen in a frame—a screen printing frame. One screen printing frame for each color.
Next, I press the ink in the desired color through the appropriate screen in the desired quantity. By repeating this process layer by layer, the final image is created.
The screen printing frames are reusable; after printing the desired quantity, the stencil can be removed, making the frame usable for the next color. The exposure process is then repeated with the next design.
It's important to determine the print run before starting the printing process. Exposing and cleaning require considerable time and patience, and printing additional runs requires repeating the entire process.
All in all, a labor-intensive process, with the advantage that making multiple prints is very possible, which keeps the price per print relatively low.
The process is completely manual from start to finish, which ensures an artisanal and authentic product.
